Mazars Nederland originates from Paardekooper & Hoffman, a truly Dutch company. The basis for the company was laid by Jan Paardekooper in the Rotterdam Scheepvaartkwartier in 1927. In the first few decades, the accountancy firm serves many big, prominent clients in the immediate vicinity of the harbour: shipping companies, shipbrokers, dispatching agents, shipbuilders, banks and insurance companies. Through mergers and collaborations in the following years, many big clients merge into multinational companies and international offices.
In the 1950s, the first office outside Rotterdam opens its doors in The Hague. Through mergers with other firms, a national network starts to take shape. At the end of the 1970s, Paardekooper & Hoffman is expanded with a new branch: tax advice. Tax experts join the firm as partners, and 1980 marks the beginning of the collaboration with Accountants Administratieconsulenten, under the name of Kotterman Neurink & Co. In 1986, Paardekooper & Hoffman distinguishes itself as one of the co-founders of the global MRI organisation. In 1997, legal services are integrated into Paardekooper & Hoffman as a new discipline.
In the following years, Dutch entrepreneurs are faced with an avalanche of changes: the IT revolution, the opening of the borders, the introduction of the Euro and growing competitive pressure. In order to optimise international services to clients, in 2000 Paardekooper & Hoffman merges with Mazars, a European organisation of accountants and tax advisers. As of February 2003, the name of Mazars Paardekooper & Hoffman is abbreviated to Mazars.
