Approximately 16,7 million people populate the small country. As a consequence the Netherlands has one of the highest densities (people/square km) in the world.
Nearly half of the country’s inhabitants live in the western site of the country around Amsterdam, utrecht, The Hague and Rotterdam. The area between these cities is often seen as one big city called “Randstad”. The educational level is very high with world class universities especially in the technical and agricultural area. The good educational system has lead to a 4th position in the Global Talent Index just behind the usA, uK and Canada (Heidrick & struggles Global talent index 2007-2012).
The country is known for its tolerance and over the centuries has welcomed many foreigners which have become part of Dutch society. The country can best be characterized as secular with Christian roots. The current population is a mixture of Catholics (31%), Protestants (21%), Muslims (5%) and other religions. The largest group, however, is not religious (>40%).
